CobotDS Phone Tutorial

Introduction

This tutorial will familiarize you with the basic functionality of CobotDS, by leading you through a sample phone session. The tutorial consists of a series of phone commands for you to say to cobot over the telephone. You will then see what cobot says on the telephone, and what cobot does in LambdaMoo, in response to your phone commands.

Note that this tutorial only illustrates what happens as a result of your phone commands to cobot. For example, as users in LambdaMoo become aware that you are on the phone, they may cause cobot to say additional things over the phone. Also, because cobot likes to do things his own way, sometimes what cobot says will not exactly correspond to what is shown below.

A Sample Session

Calling cobot on the phone

  • Dial the toll-free number for calling cobot.
  • Cobot says on the phone, Hello, who is this?
    •
  • Say your user name. For example, if Buster called, he would say Buster.
  • Cobot says on the phone, Secret password?
    •
  • Say your password. For example, if your password was 0123, you would say zero one two three.
  • Cobot says on the phone, Hi User Name! What do you want to do?
  • Users in cobot's room in LambdaMoo see, cobot falls down, startled by the phone ringing.
  • Users in cobot's room in LambdaMoo see, cobot begins talking to User Name!

  • You are now in the main phone command loop.
  • You can say a command as illustrated below, but for now say nothing.
  • Cobot says on the phone, Next?

  • Cobot will keep saying "Next?" until he hears a phone command from you.
  • Cobot will also say "Next?" when he doesn't understand you. Say This is a garbage sentence

    Emote action commands (e.g., "wave", "hug", and so on)

  • Say one of the standard LambdaMOO social verbs, e.g., say wave.
  • (Assuming Cobot correctly understands you) Cobot says on the phone, You wave.
  • Users in cobot's room in LambdaMoo see, cobot holds up a sign: User Name passes on a wave.

  • To wave to a specific user such as HFh, say wave HFh.
  • Cobot says on the phone, You wave to HFh.
  • (If HFh is not logged in, Cobot also says, Cobot says HFh is not logged in right now, to you.)
  • Users in cobot's room in LambdaMoo see, cobot waves to HFh.
  • Users in cobot's room in LambdaMoo see, cobot [to HFh]: That was from User Name.

    The "say" action command

  • To say something to everyone in cobot's room, say say.
  • Cobot says on the phone, What message would you like to pass?

  • Say a sentence from the (default) smalltalk grammar. For example, say I am fine.
  • Cobot says on the phone, You say "I am fine" to everyone.
  • Users in cobot's room in LambdaMoo see, cobot holds up a sign: User Name says, 'i am fine' from the phone.

  • Tell CobotDS to start using your personal grammar. Say grammar.
  • Cobot says on the phone, Which grammar would you like to use? The choices are smalltalk, personal, and cliche.

  • Say personal.
  • Cobot says on the phone, The grammar is now set to personal.

  • To say something to a specific user such as Buster, say say Buster.
  • Cobot says on the phone, What message would you like to pass?

  • Say a sentence from your personal grammar. Say ...
  • Cobot says on the phone, You say "..." to Buster.
  • Users in cobot's room in LambdaMoo see, cobot [to Buster]: This is from User Name: ....
